Biogas plays a central role in Arla Sweden’s transport strategy, helping to reduce climate emissions and strengthen Swedish agriculture’s preparedness.
In 2018, Arla transitioned all its heavy transport operations in Sweden to fossil-free fuels, becoming the first company in the country to achieve this milestone. Seven years later, Arla’s fossil-free transport fleet has traveled approximately 290 million kilometers—the equivalent of 750 trips to the moon or more than 7,000 times around the Earth.
This shift has prevented approximately 286,000 tons of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to the emissions from 2.4 million flights between Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport and London Heathrow.
Since 2018, Arla has continued investing in sustainable transport. Earlier this year, 15 new electric trucks were introduced. Currently, the cooperative operates 20 electric trucks and 65 biogas trucks, with the remainder of its fleet running on fossil-free diesel.
Arla’s overall climate goal is to reduce emissions across its entire production chain by 63% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels. Key logistics initiatives include:
