Dairy shut down for unauthorized operations

The Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) has shut down Mellanösterns Mejeri AB in Eskilstuna and has disposed of five tons of food products found on the premises.

Mellanösterns Mejeri AB, which produced cheese and other dairy products, was closed by the agency July 22.

  • This company was neither approved nor registered for food production, and dairy products were being manufactured under unsanitary conditions. We believe there is a risk that consumers could become ill from consuming these products. That’s why we immediately shut down the operation and are urging people to discard any products labeled ’Ellen dairy’, said Henrik Björnfot, Head of Food Control in Southern Sweden in a press release.

For food to be sold to consumers, the company and its production must be registered or approved. It is the company’s responsibility to ensure that the food it puts on the market is safe. The company’s procedures for food safety and the accuracy of labeling are regularly inspected by the municipality, the County Administrative Board, or the Swedish Food Agency, depending on the type of business.

The Swedish Food Agency works to ensure that food is safe and that consumers can trust what they eat. This work is done in collaboration with other authorities and the food industry. The inspection of Mellanösterns Mejeri AB was carried out in cooperation with Eskilstuna Municipality.
