Danish farmers are now energy producers too

A record number of Danish farmers are integrating renewable energy production into their operations, according to new data from Statistics Denmark.

Since 2007, the number of farms selling renewable energy alongside traditional agriculture has surged by 91.9%, rising from 1,201 to 2,305 in 2023. The Danish Agriculture & Food Council (LF), citing the latest figures from Statistics Denmark, highlights that renewable energy is now one of the fastest-growing secondary activities in the agricultural sector.

  • These figures clearly show that farmers are playing an active role in the green transition by combining traditional farming with renewable energy production, says Flemming Nør-Pedersen (Photo), Deputy CEO of LF, in a press release He adds:
  • This is a positive development that underscores the need for a broader perspective on agriculture. Farmers contribute more than just food—energy is also a crucial resource in an increasingly uncertain world. I expect this trend to continue in the coming years, and I welcome it.

Beyond energy production, agritourism has also seen significant growth. However, contracting services for agricultural machinery remain the most common secondary activity in farming. LF further notes that many farms engage in multiple secondary activities, with Statistics Denmark recording 16,443 such activities across 11,464 farms in 2023.
