The Faroese dairy cooperative MBM is consolidating its cheese production in Skálavik on the island of Sandoy. The ambition is to develop new specialty cheeses
Until now, MBM (Meginfelag Búnaðarmanna) has only had the cheese Kæsa in its product range, but soon the selection of local cheeses will expand. This will happen when cheese production fully begins at the newly built cheese dairy in Skálavik, where various types of cheese will be produced.
At MBM’s dairy in Hoyvík, near Tórshavn, more than 60 different dairy products are made using Faroese milk sourced from 15 farms. However, due to a lack of space for expanding cheese production at the Hoyvík facility, the decision was made to relocate cheese production to Skálavik on the island of Sandoy. With this new location, the plan is for milk used in cheese production to come from farms on the island.
MBM was established in 1977, but since 2016, the cooperative’s operations have been divided into two units, each with its own name: Raska and Búrøkt. While Raska is responsible for processing milk and continuously developing new food and beverage products based on Faroese milk, Búrøkt supplies products and services to the agricultural sector. Together, MBM employs around 50 people.
