The Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelverket) has updated its national action plan, ”More People Doing More,” to accelerate efforts in reducing food waste.
Food waste remains a significant issue both in Sweden and globally, contributing to environmental damage, economic losses, and food supply challenges. Although food waste has declined slightly since in Sweden since the plan’s initial launch in 2018, the pace must increase to meet sustainability targets according to The Swedish Food Agency
The action plan serves as a key framework for authorities, detailing measures they can implement. However, businesses across the food supply chain—including manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers—must also play an active role in waste reduction efforts.
The updated plan highlights the need for better food waste measurement, clearer communication, and stronger ties to economic incentives. Authorities continue to focus on four core areas:
Among the plan’s ten priority actions are supporting industry initiatives, improving data collection, increasing public awareness, and ensuring food regulations allow flexibility to minimize waste. Additionally, the plan aligns with EU waste prevention policies and may undergo further revisions if the EU adopts binding food waste reduction targets.
