Norwegian agriculture steps up for sustainable feed

‘The Future Feed project’ unites key players in Norway’s feed and food industries to enhance preparedness and promote the use of sustainable, Norwegian-produced feed.

The Norwegian government has set an ambitious target: by 2034, all feed for livestock and farmed fish must originate from sustainable sources. Achieving this goal will require a significant boost in production.

Currently, 55% of the raw materials used in livestock feed are Norwegian-produced, with plans to increase this to 70%. For farmed fish feed, only 8% of raw materials are domestically produced. The government aims to raise this figure to 25% by 2034.

To meet these targets, the strategy calls for an increase of 640,000 tons in sustainable feed production within Norway, alongside ensuring that all imported raw materials come from sustainable sources.

The project emphasizes creating a sustainable food chain through collaboration, innovation, and legislative reforms. TINE Dairy, one of ten participating companies, is actively contributing to solutions such as defining sustainable feed, enhancing circularity, and introducing incentives for scaling up production.

The goal is to deliver proposals and expertise to support the government’s sustainability agenda. The project is set to run until September 2025.
