The pharmaceutical industry is now Denmark’s largest industrial sector with a turnover of DKK 258 billion, compared to just over DKK 216 billion in the food industry, according to LandbrugsAvisen.
In 2023, the pharmaceutical industry (pharma industry) became the largest industrial sector in Denmark measured by turnover. The pharmaceutical industry had a turnover of DKK 258 billion, compared to just over DKK 216 billion in the food industry. This information is provided by Henning Otte Hansen, Senior Advisor, Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen, in the LandbrugsAvisen (agricultural media). Back in 2000, the pharmaceutical industry was only the 9th largest industrial sector measured by turnover.
The food industry (to include tobacco) is thus the second largest industrial sector with approximately 20 percent of the total industrial turnover. The food industry’s turnover has increased from DKK 111 billion in 2020 to DKK 216 billion in 2023. If inflation is deducted, the result is a real increase of 27 percent. This corresponds to an annual real increase of just over 1 percent.
Disregarding the pharmaceutical industry, the food industry has had an increasing share of the total industrial turnover during the period.
