Since its launch in 2021, Arla, in collaboration with stores, restaurants, and consumers, has helped saving approximately 4,500 tons of food through its digital platform, Arla Deals.
The average Swedish household throws away 33 kilograms of edible food per person each year. Food waste is also one of the biggest contributors to climate change. According to the Swedish Food Agency, discarded food accounts for 8-10 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions.
In conjunction with the UN International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on September 29, Arla highlighted Arla Deals, the digital outlet it launched in 2021 to reduce food waste.
The digital platform allows stores and restaurants to purchase dairy products with shorter expiration dates at discounted prices. Since the start Arla Deals has saved thousands of tons of food that would otherwise have gone to waste. This year alone, 828 tons of milk, yogurt, and other dairy products have been sold through Arla Deals, averaging more than 3 tons per day.
– It’s fantastic that we can contribute to ensuring more of the food we produce gets eaten. We’re thrilled that so many stores and large kitchens choose to shop on Arla Deals, but we hope even more will discover and use the platform regularly moving forward. It’s a great opportunity to get bargains while helping consumers make sustainable and cost-effective choices, says Victoria Olsson, Arla’s Head of Sustainability.
