Battle over the future of Filmjölk

The Swedish Farmstead Dairies Association (Sveriges Gårdsmejerister) is calling on the EU Commission to protect filmjölk as a unique Swedish product. However, LRF Mjölk opposes this move.

In the argumentation for a geographic protection of filmjölk The Swedish Farmstead Dairies Association emphasizes filmjölk’s cultural heritage and unique flavour from lactic acid bacteria fermentation. The association also claim that many small dairy producers feel it’s being overshadowed by the rise of yogurt.

LRF Mjölk argues that EU protection with a strict definition could harm other dairy products, including flavoured and lactose-free varieties. They also point out that similar products exist across Northern Europe due to the favourable climate for lactic fermentation.

After the proposal advanced, LRF Mjölk filed a legal complaint, claiming that only a minority of producers would meet the requirements under the proposed protection. Sweden’s food agency, Livsmedelsverket, supports the designation, viewing it as a way to preserve filmjölk’s identity and provide clarity for consumers.

Although filmjölk-like products are found elsewhere, Livsmedelsverket argues that filmjölk has deep Swedish roots, dating back to Viking times. The case is now under review by the Swedish administrative court.
