World consumption of agricultural products is expected to increase by 13 percent over the next ten years. This appears from a report from OECD-FAO.
The ‘OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2024-2033’ report, which was published in July and is the tenth in the series, provides a consensus assessment of the global agricultural development over the next ten years.
Among other things, the report concludes that the increase in consumption follows the population development. Thus, India will lead the increase in demand, followed by Africa and the Middle East.
The report also shows that actual prices for agricultural products will continue to fall.
Christina Furustam, who is an expert in trade and international issues at LTR, The Federation of Swedish Farmers (interest and business organization), emphasizes several highlights in this year’s report, appearing on the LRF website – for instance:
– that Africa is estimated to account for a larger share of the increase in cereal production than before,
– that agriculture will produce more but emit fewer greenhouse gases per unit, and
– that dairy products are highlighted in the report as foods rich in nutrition and energy.
