Tariffs could cause turbulence for the food sector

Danish Agriculture & Food Council urges calm and patience among Danish food exporters

Tariffs’—it’s the word dominating news coverage following President Trump’s announcement of new U.S. import duties, including a 20% tariff on goods from the EU.

This move will also affect Danish food exporters to the U.S., but the Danish Agriculture & Food Council is urging exporters to stay calm and not overreact. This is reported by the online media Fødevarewatch.

From a food industry perspective, high tariffs are unlikely to have the intended effect.

  • The idea that tariffs will suddenly pressure companies to move their production to the U.S. is very hard to see working in the real world, says Kenneth Lindharth Madsen, Head of Market Analysis at the Danish Agriculture & Food Council.
  • For most companies, that kind of move isn’t a decision or investment you can implement in just a few months. It takes time and is a major strategic shift. That’s why our short-term recommendation is to hold back and monitor how the situation develops, he explains.

In 2024, Denmark’s food cluster exported goods worth DKK 8.1 billion to the U.S., accounting for about 4% of total food exports. In the same year, imports from the U.S. totaled DKK 2.4 billion. Read the full article in Landbrugsavisen HERE
