Arla accelerates transport electrification

Four new electric distribution lorries – two from Scania and two from Volvo – are being put into service for deliveries from Arla’s dairy in Kallhäll, north-west Stockholm. At the same time, the company has invested in rapid chargers, enabling more electric routes to be run each day.

This week, two of the new electric lorries entered service, with two more due to hit the road before the end of the year. The vehicles will operate from Stockholm Dairy and will deliver milk, cream and other dairy products to food retailers across the Stockholm region.

  • Electrifying our transport is an important step in our journey towards more sustainable logistics. In addition to reducing emissions, it also contributes to better air quality and lower noise levels, says Eric Wärnhem, Head of Fleet at Arla.

To maximise the benefits of the new distribution lorries, Arla has also installed four rapid chargers at Stockholm Dairy.

  • The rapid chargers allow us to run the lorries in two shifts, which increases capacity and improves efficiency. Altogether, we can now make more electric deliveries each day, says Eric Wärnhem.

Sustainable transport solutions, including both electricity and biogas, are a key part of Arla’s green transition. I  2018, Arla Sweden switched to using only fossil-free fuels for its own transport, becoming the first company in the country to do so. Arla Sweden now operates a total of 25 electric distribution lorries and 80 biogas vehicles.
