Arla first in the Nordics with heavy-duty electric milk tanker

Arla Sweden has just tested an electric milk tanker in Vimmerby. The dairy group describes this as an important step in its efforts to reduce its climate impact and achieve its climate targets by 2030.

Arla is the first in the Nordic region to operate 40,000-litre milk transports powered entirely by electricity.

For two weeks, the electric truck has been used to transport milk between Vimmerby and the dairies in Kalmar, Linköping and Jönköping. The trailer is 16.8 metres long, and the tractor unit is a Scania 45R. Drivers have responded very positively, describing the vehicle as quiet, smooth and powerful.

The electric solution results in a slightly lower load capacity, as the batteries add extra weight, but the reduction is considered manageable.

– The challenge going forward lies in building an efficient charging infrastructure at the dairies. The milk tankers operate around the clock, so charging must take place during natural stops and breaks, says Eric Wärnhem, Vehicle Manager at Arla Sweden.
