Butter and mozzarella led gains as Global Dairy Trade closed another auction in positive territory on Tuesday. Prices have now risen 21 per cent since December.
The latest GDT auction on Tuesday showed an overall increase of 0.6 per cent. It is the second consecutive rise – the previous auction saw prices climb 1.5 per cent – following a pair of significant falls in April.
The gains were unevenly distributed. Butter and mozzarella posted the largest advances, while cheddar and milk fat moved in the opposite direction. Among powder products, the picture was mixed: skim milk powder held steady, while whole milk powder edged slightly higher.
The two successive increases have brought prices back to roughly the level seen at the start of April, before the downturn set in.
Looking at the year as a whole, the trend is positive compared with the sharp falls seen last autumn. The GDT index bottomed out in December at 1,008 and reached 1,221 at the most recent auction – a gain of 21 per cent from the year’s lowest point.
