
The international dairy exchange GDT recorded an index decline of 3.4 per cent on Tuesday – the first since December. Butter and anhydrous milk fat posted the largest falls.
After uninterrupted gains on the GDT exchange since the start of the year, the index fell 3.4 per cent at the 7 April auction.
Butter and anhydrous milk fat saw the steepest declines, falling 8.1 and 7.1 per cent respectively. Mozzarella followed with a drop of 6.2 per cent, while cheddar fell 3.1 per cent. Skim milk powder and whole milk powder recorded more modest falls of 1.6 and 0.7 per cent respectively, and lactose was down 0.6 per cent.
Only buttermilk powder bucked the trend, rising 0.7 per cent.
The index decline is the first since December. Up to this point, 2026 had been marked by continuous gains in the GDT average price index, which covers a range of dairy categories.
