The International Dairy Federation (IDF) emphasizes the importance of protecting dairy terms considering emerging technologies, according to a recent press release
One of IDF’s core priorities is safeguarding the use of dairy terminology. In response to new technologies, IDF has released a position paper on the use of dairy-related terms for products derived from cellular agriculture. While IDF supports innovation, it also stresses the need for clear and accurate labeling to distinguish cellular agriculture products from milk and dairy products.
Why protecting dairy terms is essential:
• It helps prevent consumer confusion by ensuring that products using dairy terms accurately reflect the presence of milk or dairy ingredients.
• It supports fair trade practices by preventing misleading labeling that could give unfair advantages to non-dairy products mimicking milk or dairy.
• It promotes consistency across international markets in the labeling and marketing of cellular agriculture products and encourages standardized practices aligned with global regulatory frameworks.
