Phosphor whey – a new by-product from dairy production

In collaboration with Arla Foods Ingredients, the Danish company Dalgas has developed a method to recycle residual whey into a new natural phosphorus product that reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers

Phosphor whey is a new by-product from dairy production – and a completely new product for the agricultural sector. When phosphor whey is added to livestock manure, it not only recycles a waste product but also results in a more balanced fertilizer. This innovative use of whey has been developed in a partnership between Arla Foods Ingredients and Dalgas.

  • We’re pleased to now include phosphor whey as part of our product portfolio at Dalgas. It gives us the opportunity to offer farmers a natural way to boost the nutrient content of slurry with low phosphorus levels and reduce reliance on commercial fertilizers, says Kristian Schøler Kjeldsen, Project Manager at Dalgas.

Phosphor whey is a by-product of a by-product. Whey is first separated during cheese production. It contains high levels of nutrients, which Arla Foods Ingredients uses in protein products, medical nutrition, and infant formula. Phosphor whey, then, is the portion of the whey that cannot be used in these applications.
