Arla Foods and its logistics partner XPO Logistics are strengthening their collaboration. With a new, high-tech distribution centre in Northamptonshire, Arla aims to streamline the handling of dairy products for the UK market and significantly reduce its climate footprint.

Arla Foods is now taking a major step towards optimising its UK infrastructure. In partnership with XPO Logistics, the company is establishing a new central hub in Northamptonshire that will consolidate the distribution of the group’s ambient and chilled products, including cheese, butter and yoghurt.

The objective of the new centre is twofold: to ensure a more robust supply chain and to act as a key driver in Arla’s ambition to reduce transport-related CO₂ emissions. By consolidating activities at a single location, the dairy group expects to eliminate a substantial number of transport kilometres.

Automation to Future-Proof the Cold Chain
The investment represents not only a geographical consolidation, but also a technological upgrade. XPO Logistics will implement advanced automation solutions at the new facility, designed to increase efficiency in order fulfilment and create new, specialised jobs within warehouse management.

From Arla’s perspective, the initiative is seen as a strategic consolidation of its position in the UK market. Centralising the cold chain is a key element in ensuring that British consumers receive dairy products more efficiently and with a smaller environmental footprint.

Operational in 2027
The new distribution centre forms part of Arla’s broader investment plans in the UK, which remains one of the group’s most important markets. The project is currently under development, with the first goods expected to leave the facility towards the end of 2027.

The investment sends a clear signal of Arla’s long-term commitment to the UK food supply, where optimised logistics are viewed as essential to maintaining competitiveness in a challenging market.
