Denmark no longer the world’s no. 1 organic market

Denmark has lost its position as the world’s leading organic nation. This is shown by a new international report presented at the opening of Biofach in Nuremberg on 10 January.

According to the report, Switzerland has overtaken Denmark for the first time in terms of the share of organic products in grocery sales. In Switzerland, organic goods now account for 12.3 per cent of the market, while Denmark’s share, after several years of decline, fell to 11.6 per cent in 2024. Austria follows closely in third place with 11.4 per cent.

In fact, this is the second time Denmark has been overtaken by Switzerland. As early as 2019, Denmark lost first place in terms of per-capita consumption of organic products. In 2024, a Swiss consumer spent an average of 3,588 kroner per year on organic food – around 800 kroner more than a Dane.

  • We can only applaud the fact that organic farming is gaining ground in Switzerland and elsewhere. In Denmark, we have been proud to call ourselves world champions in organic food. Now we risk missing out on the attention, the investments and the demand that come with such a title. This should be a wake-up call for politicians. Too little is happening here at home, says Rasmus Prehn, director of the Danish Organic Association, in a press release.

In the press release, he highlights that the Danish Organic Association has presented a catalogue of concrete proposals aimed at strengthening organic farming in the fields, in the shops and on Danes’ plates.

The report The World of Organic Agriculture – Statistics & Emerging Trends 2026 was prepared by the research institute FiBL in cooperation with the umbrella organisation IFOAM – Organics International. It was presented at the world’s largest organic food trade fair, Biofach, which took place in Nuremberg lanst week. As is tradition, Danish producers have a joint stand at the fair – this year with 23 exhibitors.
