The Finnish dairy company Valio’s development programme Future Valio Farmers has been named one of the best cooperative innovations in Europe by Cogeca – the European organisation for agricultural cooperatives.

The Finnish training programme was launched in spring 2025. Developed in collaboration between Valio and its cooperative members, it aims to support young milk producers and new, ambitious agricultural entrepreneurs. The training scheme offers a comprehensive introduction to farm management, entrepreneurship and network-building.

In a press release, Valio highlights the urgent need for generational renewal in agriculture. With the average age of Finnish dairy farmers standing at 50 in 2024, the company believes the challenge is shared across Europe. Supporting younger farmers who wish to enter the sector is vital for ensuring a sustainable milk supply and maintaining the industry’s attractiveness in the future.

The Cogeca judging panel praised the programme for its “visionary approach”, its strategic investment in future agricultural leaders, its social value and its contribution to strengthening local communities.

The Future Valio Farmers programme runs for two years and combines four in-person sessions with assignments, study trips, company visits, team meetings and the development of individual business plans for participating farms. Topics include financial management, production management, employer responsibilities and stakeholder communication.

Interest has exceeded expectations as  Valio received 100 applications in the spring, despite originally aiming for 50. The company considers this a strong sign that it is well on the way to securing Finland’s future milk supply and supporting the next generation of dairy entrepreneurs.
