Anhydrous milk fat rises 6.4 per cent whilst skimmed milk powder falls 4.0 per cent – the overall price index ended virtually unchanged, posting a rise of just 0.1 per cent.
The overall price index at the latest Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction rose modestly by 0.1 per cent to an average price of €3,772 per tonne. Behind the near-unchanged headline figure, however, lie considerable movements across individual product categories.
On the fats side, the picture is divided. Anhydrous milk fat (AMF) rose sharply by 6.4 per cent to €6,623 per tonne, whilst butter moved in the opposite direction, falling 0.9 per cent to €5,983 per tonne.
The cheese market was characterised by calm, with modest gains. Cheddar rose 0.1 per cent to €4,291 per tonne, whilst mozzarella advanced 0.5 per cent to €3,666 per tonne.
The powder segment showed the widest spread of the auction. Skimmed milk powder rose 5.2 per cent to €2,970 per tonne, whilst whole milk powder fell 4.0 per cent to €3,231 per tonne. Buttermilk powder was not traded at this auction.
Lactose fell marginally by 0.3 per cent to €1,263 per tonne.
