75 percent of the Germans’ milk is GMO-free. On the other hand, organic milk lags behind with a market share of 4.5 percent, according to Verband Lebensmittel ohne Gentechnik.
15 years ago, the German food authorities introduced the ’Without Genetic Engineering’ (Ohne Gentechnik) label intended for food based on non-genetically modified raw materials. The label also applied to milk from cows fed GMO-free feed. And after a slow start, farmers, dairies, and consumers have now embraced the scheme with the result that more than 75 percent of all German milk today is from cows without GMO feed in the trough. On the other hand, organic milk is relatively low with a market share of 4.5 percent – to be seen in relation to Denmark, where organic milk has almost a third of the market.
