Increasing use of weight-loss drugs boosts sales of whey protein

Arla Foods Ingredients (AFI) is seeing a growing trend among Western consumers turning to weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic, which in turn is driving demand for whey protein products.

For AFI, the increasing use of weight-loss medication—also known as GLP-1 drugs—is clearly reflected in sales of whey protein. This is especially true in the U.S. market, where around 10 percent of the population uses GLP-1 drugs, including those from Novo Nordisk. The rapid weight loss achieved with these treatments requires a protein-rich diet to help rebuild muscle mass—precisely what AFI’s whey protein products provide.

  • Something that is particularly fueling our current growth is the entire Danish success story around Wegovy and Ozempic. We had anticipated this at AFI, but it has taken off with far greater force than expected, said Arla Foods Ingredients’ CEO, Luis Cubel, in an interview with AgriWatch.

It is not only weight-loss drugs driving AFI’s sales. A broader consumer interest in nutrition and health is also contributing. In the first half of 2025, AFI’s revenue grew by 53.7 percent compared with the same period in 2024.
