Starbucks US removes extra charge for plant-based alternatives to milk

Starting November 7, Starbucks customers in the US and Canada will no longer pay an additional fee to choose a plant-based milk alternative over dairy in their coffee or tea.

  • Core to the Starbucks Experience is the ability to customize your beverage to make it yours. By removing the extra charge for non-dairy milks we’re embracing all the ways our customers enjoy their Starbucks, said Brian Niccol, Starbucks’ Chairman and CEO, in a press release.

Substituting non-dairy milk – whether its soy, oat, almond or coconut drink – in a handcrafted beverage is the second most requested customization from Starbucks customers, behind adding a shot of espresso.

Starbucks in the UK, Germany, and France eliminated the surcharge for plant-based milk alternatives last year. In Denmark, however, customers still pay an additional 5 DKK for almond, coconut, oat, soy, and lactose-free milk in café drinks.
