The world’s largest retail chain, Walmart, has opened its second fluid milk dairy facility – this time in Valdosta, Georgia. The new plant represents an investment of 350 million dollars and will create more than 400 new jobs.
The facility is designed to strengthen a more robust and transparent milk supply chain in the southeastern United States and will supply over 650 Walmart stores and Sam’s Club warehouses with fluid milk. Production will include a wide range of milk varieties under Walmart’s own brands, based on direct purchasing from local dairy farmers, the company said in a press release.
According to Bruce Heckman, Vice President of Manufacturing at Walmart U.S., innovation and capacity building are central to the initiative:
Walmart opened its first dairy facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 2018, and a third plant is already planned for Robinson, Texas, with an expected opening in 2026. Taken together, the investments mark a clear strategy of increased vertical integration and greater control over quality, price stability and logistics within the dairy category.
The initiative forms part of Walmart’s broader commitment to invest 350 billion dollars in American manufacturing by 2031. More than two-thirds of the company’s annual merchandise spend already consists of products made, grown or assembled in the United States.
